Position Purpose:

The Assistant Director of Communications will develop and produce content for the School’s website, social media sites, and printed publications in order to convey a consistent and current image of the school to both internal and external constituencies. Primary responsibilities will be to manage social media channels, develop promotional videos, provide copy and graphic design, and work with outside vendors and photographers as needed. Strong writing and video production skills are required.

Essential Job Functions:

Work with the Director to develop and implement a comprehensive plan for showcasing the school’s mission of Excellence with Humanity through social media, by creating and scheduling on-going posts and assisting the Administration, Admissions, and faculty with delivering the message. Analyze online usage with Google Analytics to measure effectiveness of messaging.

Script, tape, and edit promotional videos to highlight campus programs and events, and profile faculty and students for use on the school’s website and social media sites.

Serve as primary photographer for the school on a daily basis by photographing events, classes, games, and performances.

Provide copy and/or graphic design for web stories, web pages, fundraising appeals, course catalog, college profile, school handbook, postcards, invitations, brochures, posters, commencement materials, varsity awards, and other non-admissions publications. Work with outside designers and printers on production and mailing.

Provide research, writing, and editing for the biannual alumni magazine. Work with freelance designer and printer on layout and production as needed.

Prepare media pitches, press releases, media advisories, backgrounders, by-lined articles, and Q&A's to publicize school events, student and faculty accomplishments, and other publicity opportunities. Provide photographic coverage of people and events, either personally or by hiring a professional photographer.

Work with staff at The Rivers School Conservatory and The Rivers School Day Camps to develop promotional materials as needed.

Work with the Athletic Department to manage their Twitter channel, recognize student-athlete and alumni achievements, and promote postseason tournaments.

Take on additional assignments as needed, including assisting with special events.


Minimum Education and Experience: The Assistant Director of Communications shall have at least 3 years of work experience in social media, video production, writing, and desktop publishing/printed material design. A Bachelor’s degree is preferred, as is prior experience at not-for-profit organizations.

Required Skills:

Excellent writing skills

Excellent video scripting, production, and editing skills using Final Cut

Excellent layout and design skills using Adobe InDesign

Ability to analyze website and social media usage

Demonstrated ability to effectively use social media and monitor advances in technology

Demonstrated ability to efficiently and accurately produce printed materials

Ability and high comfort level managing external printing vendors as well as managing in-house print jobs

Ability to juggle and prioritize requests from administrators, faculty, staff , and parents

Demonstrated attention to detail and organizational skills

Demonstrated ability to provide excellent customer service via excellent listening skills and follow-through

Ability to work independently and as part of a team

A positive and enthusiastic work ethic

Equipment Used: In order to complete the required job duties, the Assistant Director of Communications must be proficient with Microsoft Office as well as Adobe InDesign and Final Cut for Mac. Adobe Photoshop and/or Illustrator usage is also sometimes required in addition to significant use of e-mail. Knowledge of website analytical tools, such as Google Analytics, required.
